Decipher began with a feeling. A feeling that security had become overly complicated, that it was so noisy and dense that even veteran pros who have been in the game since before computers screeched in pain when you tried to connect them to the internet were having a hard time making sense of it all.
Seven years, hundreds of zero days, and exactly one hiatus later, and that feeling is more present than ever. If anything, it’s worsened with the seemingly increasing issue of content bloat (thanks to social media and a dash of AI). All that noise means that actually getting to the heart of what a security incident means - for the more technical folks, for society, or most importantly, for you - might leave you with the same feeling you have when you step onto the RSA showfloor: confused, overwhelmed, and wondering how you got here.
But we’re optimists, and that’s reflected in the mission statement we coined when we first launched in 2018: Security without fear. Now that we’re relaunching Decipher with a fresh face, we want to reiterate what “security without fear” means for cybersecurity news in today’s world:
Closing the gap with context: There are dozens of publicly reported data breaches every day - and at this point, people are tracking them through government websites, Twitter bots, and even ransomware data leak websites.
But we’re less interested in the “what” part of data breach notifications - an incident happened, the company is responding, “your security is important to us.” Instead, we want to look at the “why,” and “what does this mean?” Context matters. We want to add important and vital information about security news that goes beyond the breaking news breach of the day, looks at the bigger picture and helps security teams cut through the noise.
Trusted voices: We’re lucky enough to get to talk to some of the brightest minds in the security community. And we think our readers deserve a front-row seat to hear their stories and opinions. We want to bring those voices to you in an unfiltered and direct way.
Embracing newcomers: Cybersecurity affects everyone, and it’s never been more apparent than now. That might look like kindergarteners with delayed school schedules due to ransomware attacks, or it might mean church administrators targeted by business email compromise attacks.
Yes, we’re happy to write about DLL sideloading, process injection or even side-channel attacks, but the heart of our stories will always be the people that are impacted. And part of that is making sure that the stories we write are understandable and useful for everyone, not just the technical elite.
As we said when we originally launched in 2018, Decipher is here for you.
